Charles Goodyear (1800–1860) was a self-taught American chemist and engineer who revolutionized the rubber industry. For years, he struggled with poverty and debt while trying to make rubber durable. In 1839, he accidentally discovered the process of vulcanization by dropping a mixture of rubber and sulfur onto a hot stove. This breakthrough transformed rubber from a sticky, heat-sensitive substance into a tough, weatherproof material used in millions of products today.
